In conjunction with Darnell Farms' Labor Day Celebration, Jackson Co. NC NAACP’s President Enrique Gomez (professor of Astronomy and Physics) will conduct ‘sky scrolls’ to help guests become better acquainted with the night sky. As part of the weekend, there are also games, hay rides, corn maze, fishing, swimming, camping, music, labor speakers, fresh produce, home-made ice cream and other great food.
Tour de Cashiers Mountain Cycling Experience across scenic mountain byways of western North Carolina. This popular pedaling event attracts participants from the southeast, many returning every year for the traditional ride, and bragging rights for completing one of the most challenging rides in the nation. Runners can also participate in a 5K race the same morning.
Performers in period costume will offer life demonstrations of how life would have been for the early settlers of the Appalachian mountains. You can see blacksmiths at work, learn how lye soap was made, discover the lost art of chair bottoming or hearth cooking, and more.
Enjoy a taste of southern Appalachian culture, art, and music at Mountain Heritage Day, a long-running festival presented by Western Carolina University. Enjoy mountain bluegrass music, activities, regional arts and crafts, and food vendors.
