Policies and FAQ's

What is at Laughing Trout Camp? *  Lake front, timber-frame pavilion, with stone fireplace, sitting areas, dining areas, fully equipped kitchen/ two bathrooms/showers
* Outdoor gas grill, fire pit & scenic picnic areas
* Ample parking can accommodate RV parking (no hookups), gated for night time privacy
* Convenient, adjacent public boat ramp
* Easy on-site rental of boats/kayaks/canoes [advance reservations suggested]
* Private boat dock, two private beaches, free use of water toys/fishing gear
* Dog kennels available
* Convenient off-site business center available. [Wi-Fi, Private conference room, Fax, Copier, FedEx drop-off/receipt, mail receipt]
*  SUNDOG Club members have camp access to pavilion and lake activities, daily 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
What won't I need to bring? Prior to your visit you will be sent the Laughing Trout Camp Experience Guide which   details the kitchen/pavilion amenities and will help you plan your stay. The heated/air conditioned space offers all the comforts and appliances, pans and utensils that our "gourmet chef" suggested we have, and a few things more.
* On a personal note, each guest will find a personalized SUNDOG tote waiting in the yurt, complete with organic cotton towels, robe (adults), & a personal lap throw to use during your stay.
* Each yurt is supplied with Serta mattresses, Egyptian cotton sheets, Down-like pillows, comforters, Satellite TV, DVD player, alarm clock/ipod station, coffeemaker, hair dryer, iron, heater, fan, flashlights, candles, books, lamps, comfortable seating areas. Toddler potty and authentic chamber pot available.
* Bathrooms, heated/air conditioned, offer slate walk-in showers, pebble spa mats, paper/ cleaning/sanitary supplies, hair dryer, bath gel/shampoo/conditioners/lotions, first-aid, and an "honor" cabinet of things you might forget.  Authentic chamber pot available to add to yurt.
Essentially everything you need for your vacation is here, except groceries.  And there may even be some of those here.

Accessibility? Paths are stone/gravel, large steps from parking to pavilion, ramp to kitchen, solar lit stone steps to yurts, semi-steep path/stone steps to lake from the camp. Need moderate physical ability
How do I pay for my vacation? 
  • We accept MasterCard, Visa, Amex, and Discover. 
  • Credit information is taken when you book your reservation.  Your card will be charged when you check in. 
  • Guests assume responsibility to care for yurts, furnishings and amenities. Charges for damages, breakage, loss, excluding normal wear and tear, will appear on final mailed statement.

*Rates do not include watercraft rentals, special requests, off-site activities or Cleaning Fee of $100 Per Rental.

What if I have to modify or cancel my stay? Modifications and cancellations to your reservation can be made at any time.  Modifications are allowed depending on availability. 
When and where do I check in? 
  • Check in between 3pm & 5 pm [unless other arrangements are accepted]
  •  Check in at the SUNDOG Places Lifestyle Center [or at the Camp, with prior arrangements.]  At your 2-week call we will provide directions and coordinate check in time and location. 
  • We can personalize your check in time to accommodate your travel schedule.
  • On the day of planned arrival, Call 828-293-1000 by 5:00pm if your schedule changes and you need different check-in time/arrangements.
When and where do I check out? Check out time is by noon on your day of departure.  Keys are to be dropped off at the SUNDOG Lifestyle Center on Highway 107
Can I get cell service on premises? 
  • Cell service is very limited in the mountains. [Can you hear me now?]  Suggest you complete cell calls prior to where Highway 107 changes from four lane to two-lane.
  • There is a phone provided in the pavilion. [Works for local calls only.]
  • For long distance calls: bring a prepaid phone card, purchase a prepaid phone card at time of check-in from SUNDOG, give the number in advance to people who need to be in touch with you,  or utilize phone services available from the SUNDOG Lifestyle Center
Do you have access to the internet? Yes, wireless internet is available at the pavilion. Reception in yurts is sporadic. Private desk area and wireless is available at SUNDOG Lifestyle Center during normal business hours.
Are TV and DVD available? Yes, there is Satellite TV at the pavilion and TV's and DVD players in each yurt.
Are you pet friendly? Not so crazy about tarantulas, ferrets, monkeys or cats, but we do accommodate small dogs.  There is a non- refundable pet fee of $100 per pet. Plus guest is subject to charges for damages.  A pet guide will be included in your Laughing Trout Camp Experience Guide.
How big is Bear Creek Lake? Bear Creek Lake is a 476 acre fish-rich, skiing and boating lake.
Can I bring my boat?
  • Kayaks, canoes and motorized boats are welcome.
  •  Motorized boats will need to be trailered daily to/from the adjacent public boat ramp. We do not have a dock to tie up to.
  • Only SUNDOG boats can be left tied overnight at the dock. 
Do you have boats for rent?
  • On-site third party rentals are arranged through TJ's Water Adventures, LLC.
  • You must sign a Release of Liability and Rental Agreement upon rental.
  • Rental includes, boat, paddles, life vests, and shuttles if off-site.
  • Reservations are recommended. All info will be in the LTC Experience Guide or preview at www.tjswateradventures.com
Can I swim at the lake? Swim at your own risk.  No jumping from dock. There is no lifeguard on duty.
Do you accommodate smoking? We are a non-smoking facility. 
Where is the closest convenience store? There are 2 convenience stores 4 miles from the camp, on Highway 107, prior to turning onto SR 281.
 Where is the closest grocery store? There are 2 grocery stores on Highway 107 (Ingles and Super Wal-Mart in Sylva) approximately 13 miles from the camp.  [See directions below]

    • Take I-85 N (31mi.)
    • Veer Left Onto I-985 N / Lanier Parkway (32 mi.)
    • Continue on Cornelia Hwy / US-23 N (64 mi.)
    • Take the ramp onto US-23 N / US-441 N
    • Continue to follow US-23 N / US-441N (17 mi.)
    • Turn right at NC-116 (2 mi.)
    • Turn right at S River Rd (1.5 mi.)
    • Turn right at NC-107 S (6 mi.) [turn left to go to grocery stores]

    • Take I-95 S (118 mi.)

How do I get from the SUNDOG Places Lifestyle Center to Laughing Trout Camp
572 Bear Lake Road, Tuckasegee, NC 28783?
  • From the SUNDOG Places Lifestyle Center, Continue South (left turn from parking lot) on Highway 107, about 3 miles, to SR 281.
  • Take a Left at SR281 (Jimmy's Mini-Mart/Exxon on corner)
  • Take SR281 about four miles, to Bear Lake Road (look for -Bear Creek Lake Public access area and Boat launch- sign on the RIGHT) Bear Lake Road is a dirt road to the right of the sign.
  • Follow Bear Lake Road till it ends at the public boat ramp area (about 1 mile); Laughing Trout Camp is to the Right of this boat area, through the gate on the left.
